[Field-Homework 1] My Home Abroad

My life abroad for the past month and a half.

1. Wide Angle

My old bunk bed from Hong Kong, now in Penang.

2. Zoom

I was supposed to leave Penang after Chinese New Year, my parents bought me this hand sanitizer in preparation for that.

3. Focus

We ended up buying 30 boxes of surgical masks for friends and family, we have already sent some back to Hong Kong.

4. Crop

This is my favourite and only camera, my Pentax MX.

5. Bird’s Eye View/Aerial

This is the view from outside my parent’s bedroom, life goes on in Penang as North Asia is up in flames from the Coronavirus.

6. Worm’s Eye View

I had to buy some more stationery for my Architecture Assignments, I didn’t even bring my pencil case to Penang.

7. First-Person Perspective

My daily view, working on my assignments.

8. Skewed Angle

The staircase leading down to the ground floor, I don’t enjoy walking done these steps whenever I forget to bring something up.

9. Perspective

The first thing I see when I enter my room, it has a lot of boxes because we’re moving into our real apartment in a few months.

10. View Frame

The viewfinder of my Pentax MX is so big and bright! I love old cameras.

11. Chiaroscuro

My parents bought this lamp for me, it’s not that functional but it looks nice.

12. Seriality

Something I need with me at all times, my phone’s battery gets eaten up from all the browsing I do.

Chosen Image: Zoom

Images that are zoomed in are often used to emphasize a specific object or thing in the viewfinder. Here is a bottle of hand sanitizer with boxes of surgical masks in a plastic bag which emphasizes the importance of hygiene in times like these. Surgical Masks and hand sanitizers are now harder to come by in the market, production of these hygiene products can’t cope with the current usage in China, Asia and the rest of the world. Citizens in many countries, especially China and Hong Kong have been buying them in bulk due to the fear of running out, this has caused a lot of public chaos as not everyone has the resources to get their hands on them.

  1. Ina Wu says:

You have adequately responded to the requirements of the task and offer snippets into your new domestic life during the ongoing virus context. However, the some of the photo techniques can be improved. For example:
Bird-eye view and Worm-eye view: The former refers to the view from above, like a google earth view (Literally a bird’s view when in flight in the sky). The latter refers to a view directly from below – literally what a worm sees when it looks up.
Skew Angle: Your Skew angle photo works better as a bird-eye view photo. For a skew angle photo, the perspective line would be dramatic.
Crop: The photo would be better expressed if you try to apply a clear crop action with the narration of exploring.
View frame: The camera viewfinder serving as a view frame calls attention to the boxes that convey your current state of settlement and the exploration you are doing in the temporary housing. It is technically well-executed and visually smart.
