Field trip 2: Central Escalator

The central escalator is full of visual additions, including decorations, signs, advertisements and so on. It shows a complex but amazing mixture of escalator, visual additions and thousands of users.

1. .  No-Smoking Sign /Isolation/differentiation of speeds

differentiations of speed

The no-smoking signs are in different forms and everywhere.

However, once these signs became a part of the environment, passengers would always choose to ignore them.

Using the close up shots can help to signify the existence of these signs, since the amounts of them is not match for the attention people paid on it. And the differentiation  of speeds between signs and passengers can form this interesting contrast between dynamic and static.

2. Decorative lightings/Framing

framing

The decorative lightings enlightened the  escalator and signified the framing effect.

3. Colorful lightings / Camera is tracking/panning, subject/s is/are static

Cropping M

It is interesting to follow one single character going through all different color environments.

4.  Direction signs /unexpected view

unexpected view

Though the direction sign is head-above, seldom people would notice it. Thus, the acting of shooting actually brought people’s attention to that normal infrastructure.

5. Outside advertisement / Camera is static, subject/s is/are dynamic

static camera

The static camera and the frame of windows actually form a proscenium stage effect for the daily events happening in the shops next to the escalator.

    Your colour code seems interesting. I am not sure why the smoking sign collage is in black and white, as the other clips seem to have a continuous and well-fitting aesthetic. Your experiment has some interesting voyeuristic elements; I wonder if you could have focused more on the aspect of looking somewhere in vs. out.
