[Reading Response: Carl Abbott]

In many science magazines, it will be mentioned that the development of science and technology benefits mankind. However, science fiction movies and novels are always filled with pessimism about the future world. Due to the destruction of the environment by human, most parts of the earth will no longer be suitable for human beings to live, so people need to creating a mobile city to find new environment. Technology is supposed to enrich the future of humanity, but it is expected to help us survive in the world. Life in the past has told us that people can be alive without the power of technology. In the movie Snowpiercer, people in the train have no need to worry about their life, but they still have class struggle. Therefore, I guess these authors have considered the greed of humans, and this would cause those problems in the future.

You pointed out how class stratification and class struggle still visible in the future presented in sci-fi books and/or films. I think this idea is worthy of further exploration and elaboration. You could start with a question of consequences. What could it mean for societies to experience that kind of future? What would it mean to the cities? In the “Snowpiercer” realm, identity was defined by one’s role/position in the community. Elaborating more on an imagination if the application of distributed city concept would narrow or broaden the existing social (class) distance could help you focus when narrating your arguments.
