This video and essay focused on specific cite lobby, in Yichang, Hubei province, to reflect that the city Yichang is full of information and its own beauty. Me, Zhekai Zhang, as the director, wants to thank my friends who gave me the chance to research these different lobbies in the communities at this specific pandemic period, and some of them even joined in the filming process. At the start of the video there is a list including this part.

In every city, there are many communities that people live in, and most of the communities have a lobby, where people can get in the building or take a rest . Lobbies can be simple, with a long hallway that directly led to the elevator, lobbies can also be complex, with chairs, sofas, and resting area even beautiful decorations for specific age groups . This is a construction site that people usually ignore, or they never stop to notice and observe the structure of lobbies as they are just tools like bridge, actually lobbies contain a lot of information. By viewing a lobby, you can guess the style of the whole building, the architecture and business style of the developers, even the kind of people who lives there. However, for anyone of us, there must be a lobby that we are most familiar with, because we know when we see it, it is home.

As a newcomer, me and my friends do not have specialized equipment and all the photos or videos are created by cellphones. We use our own views to walk, experience and create the video, by stopping by and observe the lobbies carefully. All the photos and video are construction sites in Yichang, Hubei.

I used the app Jianying to create the video, including some methods of editing.

Reflections:

First of all, not all the houses have an area called lobby, because of the usage, some of the houses have only the stairs straight forward to inside, with little area that is even not enough to be called a lobby. There are two types of houses that have this circumstance, the old communities, or private houses. These two types have dramatic difference, but similar lobbies, which is a quite interesting phenomenon.

Different developers choose materials and styles completely different, based on the community of Zijing city, the styles, color, and material used are quite the same. As example, the beech on each lobby, maybe bought from the same producer.   But compared them to other lobbies, they have an enormous difference.

In addition, focused on Xinwaitan community, the lobby shows the expensive style of the whole community, with the clean, tidy window door, the texture of the wall used, and the table set with comfortable sofa. That is one of the commercial strategies of the house, with the first sight of the lobby, and the whole yard, people feel like the environment of community fits them well, then possibility for them to buy the house increases. That is possibly one of the reasons why people viewed a lot of houses before purchasing. Therefore, lobbies play an important part in commercial area, it is just we may not notice that in our daily life.

For commercial use, SOHO’s lobby also shows a good example, with shop located in the lobby and advertisement everywhere on the wall. There are many other lobbies that have shops, because of the limit of time on video, I didn’t show them all, the variety of shop is also large, grocery store, barbershop, even clothes shop sometimes located in the lobby. This provides us more information, from viewing a lobby. Advertisement can be related to the owner of the community then, some of them are strictly against advertising, thinking that may damage their appearance to sell the house. Others make lobbies more commercial then making more money.

In our real life, most of us do not often use the facility in the lobby, we only use them when we really need to, in most cases, waiting people, but those situations are rare, it results the neglection of lobbies. We need to know that lobbies do provide convenience, but also many information to be analysis.

You observed an impressive number of lobbies in your study. Perhaps you could have identified a more specific aspect (or a few aspects) of the lobby in order to conduct your comparison of the various lobbies in a more systematic manner. Some aspects to consider include the floor area, the number of notices, the types of amenities etc. Some of the spaces look more like courtyards rather than lobbies. You can also do more virtual research to substantiate your points. For example, are the lobbies often described extensively and emphasised in advertisements for housing developments? Have others conducted a study on the lobby before and what questions were they interested in?
