[Video Essay] Voyeurism by Architecture in Film

The most impressive content of the field trip is voyeurism. This is because I personally think voyeurism is an original feature that only buildings can have. In this lecture, we learn about architecture and how buildings work in movies as a whole. These architectural elements play various roles. There is a role such as improving immersion by communicating the background of the play more realistically to the reader. However, I think the role of improving immersion can be brought up in elements of movies other than architecture. Thus I thought about the original role that only architecture brings, and learned about voyeurism from field trips.

Voyeurism refers to the habit of enjoying observing others without their identity being discovered. Some say that voyeurism is an instinctive factor in humans. Because people need a lot of knowledge and information to survive. This information can also be obtained from us through visualization. Hence the monopoly of information and knowledge puts it in an advantageous position in survival. Being advantageous for survival means having power in that society or environment. This behavior was also applied to buildings in charge of people’s clothing and shelter. The higher the height, the more attention you get than others. Also due to the nature of the building, if you look out from the inside, you can obtain information without being caught, so it is voyeuristic. The original role of these buildings is still applied in the movie. Therefore, when the movie symbolizes power, the position of the character is expressed in height. There is a high expression of the house where the character lives. These contents were intended to be contained in this video essay.

In order to collect this information, it looked at movies with clear conflicts between characters and clear differences in power. This is because the use of these architectural elements is unnecessary in movies where power is not important. Hence, a representative example of this movie was an action movie. Action movies usually divide winners and losers through conflicts between two groups or individuals. In other words, it shows a clear difference in power through confrontation. In fact, if you look at the Marvel series, the most popular action movie in modern times, the symbolism of power due to these voyeuric elements is revealed through buildings. As a result ‘Avengers’ was used as an example of the movie.

In addition, the surrounding environment was recorded to prove that voyeurism in buildings is a part that is applied in daily life. It was intended to first take pictures of buildings in daily life and first to inform the importance of gaze. An example is the efforts of buildings to occupy views in tourist attractions or people’s apartments. In order to go to the actual tourist attractions and monopolize the view, the height and location of the building were fiercely selected.

In addition, as an example of this actually being applied, Lotte’s landmark, one of Korea’s highest economic companies, was used. That is Lotte Tower. Lotte Tower’s promotional video tried to convey the height of Lotte Tower realistically. In other words, he wanted to emphasize the height. Through the promotional video, Lotte made it possible to build buildings with high economic resources. In other words, it actually implies that the voyeuristic element proves the superiority of economic power. So, with Lotte Tower’s promotional video, viewers tried to understand more about voyeurism by reminding them of the buildings of nearby companies.
