For the concept “place and space”, Abbas addresses “fixed places”, such as non-places (where human beings remain anonymous), are interconnected in the “unpredictable spaces”, which act as typologies and geography. The “places” mentioned in HK has a cultural significance, which presents the idiosyncrasies of HK’s urban space — “capitalism inscribed in built space”, forming the hyperdensity open city during globalization and colonial period. Moreover, Certeau mentions the “space” where pedestrians moves in a space of present (pathway possibilities), discretes (places to ignore) and “phatic” (pedestrians’ walk metaphorically talk along streets). “Phatic” is being described for pedestrians since Certeau believes art and architecture are produced from past literacy productions, and therefore he uses stylistic devices to abstractly describe pedestrian pathways. Compared to Abbas’, Abbas explains the rise of architecture from the past, and I believe both authors addressed the significance of past achievements in gaining HK’s architecture today. I believe film takes place in here to record for citizens to experience the “disappeared” architecture, to preserve architecture (place) visually.

Great effort in reflecting upon both writings by Abbas and Certeau! Your opening statement is especially strong in establishing a relationship between the authors’ notions of space, place, and the significance inscribed within them by people, movement and interaction.
