Reading Response: Ackbar Abbas

Disappearance-I have a mixed feeling towards this word.Although there is something forever disappeared from this world, something new also come to this city representing city’s development and advancement.Architecture is complicated,it is not only concrete frame and structures,it contains history, culture, memories and emotions. But helplessly and unavoidably, the fact is that this city needs spaces for development and to support surging population. Some of the historical buildings have to be dismantled.

Hong Kong, having an unique and mixed culture and history background. There’s a lot of gorgeous and splendid historical buildings. Those colonial buildings are solid evidences and traces of the history of Hong Kong.Sadly, only a few of them are well-preserved at this moment. The best way of preservation in my own points of view is that it could be able to fully utilize the spaces of the buildings and give them a new life with least damage.Like giving them a new function or combine with modern design.

A considerate reflection on Abbas’ critical commentary on preservation. Appreciate your concluding suggestions for the future of preservation that society could repurpose spaces whilst maintaining the structural integrity of the original built form.
