[Field Homework 2] Ups and Downs

1.(Static camera, dynamic object, reverse) This stairway is located on the podium garden of my housing estate. It is popular among residents of my housing estate, as they will need to get to the club house and leave the podium through the stairs. There should be more people using the stairs. Me being able to film myself walking up and down the stairs uninterrupted by others showed that fewer people go walk around the podium for fresh air during this part of the day. In fact, they should have more time and incentive to do so due to the virus outbreak.

2.(Moving camera, static camera) It is unknown if the staff of the property management will sanitize the handrails frequently enough, so pedestrians mostly avoid holding onto them.

3.(Tracking camera, static object, focus) The tread of the stairs will become slippery very easily when there is rain. The weather these days are cloudy with a slight chance of rain. People might need to hold onto the handrails somehow.

4.(Aerial view, zoom, contrast, framing)

5.(Static camera, dynamic object, symmetric) What comes to mind to teenagers and movie-goers when they think of stairs is definitely the joker dance. Without the virus outbreak, there would be more pedestrians and it will be impossible for me to recreate this outstanding scene.

  1. Ina Wu says:

Appreciate your playfulness in doing the assignment. Specifically, the last clip, using familiar music and settings to reinvent the Joker’s staircase dance. However, if you’ve taken a closer look into the Joker’s staircase scene you would notice that other than a singular camera work, the scene was composed with tracking shots, close up shots, crop shots and slow-motion to clearly convey the chaotic movements of the dance. Do consider trying out different camera and editing techniques in your final assignment.
Another worth mention is clip 2. Here you’ve applied an abnormal point of view of the handrail. This leads me to reconsider what would hands-viewpoint looks like especially in this particular time when we all try to avoid physical contact.
To further improve, do consider having a clear narrative to support the production of your video collection. At the moment, the intension of the videos is not well conveyed. Can you further explain the title and explain how your video articulates the idea? For example, Clip 4, what are you trying to show in the ariel shot that zoom in the darkness? When working with video collection, it is crucial to consider the narrative thread of the videos and apply adequate camera techniques to support your argument.
