[Field-Homework 2] The Waterfront

The view from a part of the waterfront where Kowloon and part of Hong Kong Island can be seen under an overcast sky.

The activity and relationship between leisure and the ocean can be seen by the instance of litter in the water, in this case, a cheap fishing utensil.

The camera pans over the stretch of the waterfront, showing the construction work carried out and human activity despite the virus.

The overcast weather shown adds to the gloomy atmosphere — despite human activity, the fear of the virus still looms.

A zoomed in shot of a spotted dove flying into the distance away from the viewer. Life is fleeting and can depart in any moment just like the dove. This metaphorical activity adds to the uncertainty of living under the spread of a powerful contagion. Shot against the background of people carrying out their leisure activities along the waterfront, this reminds one that life is even more fragile under the current environment.

Your selection of topic is an interesting one. Appreciate your efforts in keeping the videos thematically and visually consistent. However, some of your videos do not work more than an image. For example, the first two clips. In terms of format, what and how for you does the video format enable the creator to convey more than a static image? Consider how you may rethink the format of a moving image and introduce camera techniques to further support the gloomy and fragile atmosphere you have successfully conveyed.
