Reading Response: Pamela Wojcik

In the reading of Lecture 6 Housing Stories, the author talks about the apartment plot as a genre that might intersect with other genres. In apartment plots, the apartment itself not only serves as the central device of the movie but also contribute to motivating and shaping the narratives. Space and temporality of the architecture both work as the motive of protagonists in the plot. The apartment help to show the protagonist’s own spatial location. It might also project the characters’ own identity, including their gender, race, class, and ethnicity.

The apartment is a microsome of the whole city. By narrating the character’s life in an enclosed but also porous space, the apartment genre can also be understood as an urban genre. It is a space similar to the city, where privacy and publicity both exist. Using the effect of sound and vision, the apartment work as a place neither fully private nor public.

Excellent and thoughtful reading response to Wojcik’s writing on the apartment complex. You have shown a clear understanding of her analysis and demonstrated an ability to articulate it in your own words with clarity. Well done.
