[READING RESPONSE: MICHEL DE CERTEAU]

From the essay, Michel de Certeau stated that space is practiced place. The writer mentioned the definition of space and place. Through the act of transformation, such as adding buildings and roads in the space, space can become place. A place shows what people can do in it and the stories of one’s life. For boundaries, the meaning of it is ambiguous and unstable, it can be found through reviewing the past and thinking of the present situation. I believe that the meaning of boundaries in a place is different for everyone. A place gives us memories, the experience in a place of everyone may not the same. It could affect our perception of a place and how we define the boundaries of a place. I think that the meaning of boundaries could be a personal thing, it is changeable through our experience and the change of function of a place.

Indeed, boundaries are to a large extent personal and subjective. On the other hand, there are many kinds of boundaries that are imposed, institutional and ideological. What de Certeau is keen to push is the challenging of boundaries that are imposing that are produced by institutional power. He advocates tactical strategies/acts that are seemingly ordinary and part of everyday behavior, such as walking and telling stories, to push back against these boundaries.
