[Reading Response:Carl Abbott]

The reading images about the urban area from the future and the things we can learn from it. Carl mentions a lot of cities that is with its own moving systems, such as wheels, airships, and continuous track. The concept of the moving city is interesting for me since the city can transport itself to the place that this most suitable for development. Because of the greenhouse effect, lots of cities that are near the sea are threatened by the gradually rising sea level.  And it may cost a huge amount of budget to keep the city safe, for example, Netherland. As Carl imagines, if a city got its own moving systems, the city can easily settle down the problem on hand and seek a better development without limit by the geographical condition, which is totally different from what we know the word “city” with geographical meaning

  1. Noella Kwok says:

I like how you pointed out climate change is one of the prominent driving forces in sci-fi movies / imaginations and attempt to reason why migratory cities may even sound feasible for cities. I’m particularly interested in your question of a city’s geographical meaning in the current world of global warming and resource depletion; it would greatly benefit from further elaboration. However, where did Abbott mentioned his vision of cities on moving system? He did point out that Distributed Cities, which is essentially a network of independent cities that supports each other, is perhaps the closest possible realisation of sci-fi imaginations as conclusion. It would be good if you could possibly find a quote from the text to support your interpretation.

On a side note – we refer to authors by their surname in academic writings, in this case, Abbott instead of Carl.
