[FIELDWORK]Young and Dangerous, Wan Chai

Young and Dangerous, DIR. Andrew Lau(1996)

The plot of the story is that Andy Chan was rescued by Bee when he was bullied by Kwan as a child, and then Andy Chan followed Bee. Ten years later, Andy Chan became Bee’s right-hand man.

Andy Chan had a deeper feud with Kwan, and then was calculated by Kwan to cause the death of a friend and broke up with a friend who later went to Taiwan.

Andy Chan was then scalded in accordance with Hong Hing(洪興社)’s rules and then kicked out of Hong Hing(洪興社) to run a bar in Saigon incognito. But then Bee’s family was murdered by Kwan, Andy Chan decided to avenge Bee. Repaired the relationship with the friend who went to Taiwan, and finally succeeded in revenge in Wan Chai.

The scenes of the whole movie are basically set in Hong Kong, and there are many common Hong Kong elements, such as neon lights and piers, among which the neon signs are very eye-catching, and some shots are even dedicated to these signs. Although many of them have been demolished, what can be seen in past photos is a common scene for Hong Kong people in the past. Shooting at night can enhance the contrast of the entire film.

I found a picture of a place like the place where the final battle of the film takes place, both near Thomson Road, and that road is an avenue and an alley. This alley in the movie is very oppressive due to the movement of the mirror, night shooting, and shaking effects, but it is not so in reality.

In the film, this kind of bright and bright signboard sets off the life of Hong Kong’s drunken fans, and hints at the desires of Hong Kong people at that time. The fighting part of the whole play often uses the shaking of the scene to create a chaotic effect, and for the close-up parts of the death of different villains, there are basically scenes, such as the street, for environmental shooting, and the last scene of Kwan’s death is especially true, A rough portrait of the surrounding people was also made.

When Kwan died, he ran out of the dark alley, ran onto the bright pedestrian street in Wan Chai, and was shot to death in the light. This part is very much in line with the contrast in the movie, when the villain dies in the light when he thinks he is going to escape, and the protagonist finally turns around and leaves after witnessing the death of Kwan in the dark alley. The purpose of this part of the presentation is to make the film appear more impactful and visually appealing to the audience.

Your virtual field trip materials appear to be limited. Have you recognized other urban scenes from the film? As the film was filmed 20 years ago, you may use recent photos to juxtapose the scenes to illustrate the changes. You have made a few analyses of the visual effects/ techniques of the film but they could be more in-depth. Lastly, do remember to cite all the sources you use for reference.
