[Reading Response: Joseph Rosa and Pamela Robertson Wojcik]

After reading Joseph Rosa Pamela Robertson Wojcik’s article, these are some of my understandings and feelings.

Rosa’s article mentioned the modern and traditional styles of houses in the movies; Americans have never entirely accepted modern architecture as their home, and most Americans prefer the conventional home, whether in film creation or life. Also, there’s a big difference between living in apartments and a penthouse; people in penthouses live in the present, look to the future, and care little about the past. The article has shown that if people fall in love, get married, or have children, and they will choose to live in more traditional buildings rather than penthouse apartments. Traditional buildings can make people feel happier and safer. However, after considering the reality, it seems that older people or those who already have families prefer more traditional architectural methods, no matter in the film art presentation or the selection of living style. Rosa also mentioned that existing architecture could inspire the inspiration of film creators, and architecture is closely related to film creation. A good film cannot be separated from the architecture inside. Even before finishing a movie or performance, many movie actors will decorate their homes to match the style of the film.

In the latter part of Pamela’s article, she focuses on the difference between Sojourn and shelter. Sojourn is more like a transient building that gives people a place to stay for a while, while the shelter is more inclined to be a place that can provide people with a sense of security and protection. For example, if I travel to Europe, that is to say, the hotel I live in can be regarded as a short-term sojourn. And if war breaks out, or even in peacetime, my home can be considered my usual shelter, providing me with a sense of security and warmth. The embassies of different countries are a good shelter during the war.

Above are some of my partial views and knowledge of this article.

  1. Sammie says:

The point about the difference between sojourn and shelter is worth exploring further. Is it possible that if one often travels to a place that is not one’s home, that place can also feel familiar and warm? Also, you responded to both readings separately. How would you draw connections between them? Finally, do take note not to exceed the word count excessively.
