The reading discussed the influence of Hollywood on early Chinese cinema, such as in acting style, camera movements, and even lighting design. I do think that it would be inevitable that Hollywood would have a huge influence due to the fact that film was invented in the United States and that the majority of the film imported during the period of early Chinese cinema was from the US. Filmmakers from the US had more time and capital to experiment with a myriad of filmmaking techniques in order to express themselves. Therefore the techniques used in Hollywood films would be more advanced and sophisticated compared to those from emerging markets such as the Chinese market. Hollywood films at the time also attracted a wider audience and are more popular, therefore there would a desire for these filmmakers to mimic Hollywood styles, in order to be able to attract an audience for their films and earn money. However, over time there would be a desire among local filmmakers to cultivate their own tastes and styles, where we can see the styles of Chinese cinema slowly diverging from Hollywood fare.

You are able to summarize and conceptualize the ideas discussed in the reading. Be careful when stating important historical facts – Hollywood being a hub for filmmaking does not necessarily indicate that film is invented in the US. I consider your writing as a good piece of work elaborating the trend of filmmaking and preference of the Chinese audiences, but it is in lack relation to the point of views raised by the author and your personal thoughts, e.g. any historical events you think would lead to the change in the taste and preferences of the Chinese audiences in choosing what film to watch?
