I found the vigilante genre of film familiar to me, as it can relate to many other superhero movies nowadays, particularly, the Batman. They share the same social background which highlighted the intensified inequality and social injustice caused by the rapid development and modernization, as well as the social status and roles of the protagonists, while this vigilantism was created to comfort the residents immersed in the riptide. Despite many components are similar, there’s one non-ignorable element, that is the environment, the city where the story took place, is presented differently.
The limitation due to city’s ongoing construction and the condition of cinematography may be the reason why interior spaces as the main way to present the contextual city scape, and the employment of paintings to simulate the city scape. While in later period of the 20th century, the city landscape had, instead of being the passive backdrops, evolved into another interactive character in the movies, which can be seen in the Batman movie and also Hong Kong movies, typically those directed by Wong Kar-wai, allowing more innovative and experimental shooting approaches, while making the cities become an impression, a concept, an idea, or an icon. I think, this is not only the evolution of cinema, but also of the cities, through this lens, I can understand the interrelated bonds among society, cities and movies.
