[READING RESPONSE] Leung Ping-kwan

In “Urban Cinema and the Cultural identity of Hong Kong”, Leung illustrates the relationship between architecture and movies, and how it influenced audiences.

Firstly, individuals could learn about the specific period’s unique local culture and trends through films at that time. For example, “As Tears Go By (1988)” shows the organized crime culture in Hong Kong and its architecture, such as fighting in the Mahjong school or the back alley. The movie further expresses the brotherhood and loyalty between gangsters, which might resonate with local audiences as they experience the same culture or have the same identities, like being in fraternal relationships or Hongkongers.

Besides, Leung examined that audiences’ identities would cultivate nostalgic feelings about the architecture and the culture behind it, which might be fading away. Take “Your Name (2016)” as an example, the two protagonists live in the urban area and the rural area in Japan. The significant contrast between sky-high buildings and village houses has reminded local audiences about rural Japan and the Shinto culture, which might be disappearing due to the society’s urban development.

Therefore, movies help individuals record stories and memories through architecture.

It is enjoyable to read your analysis of this article and the case analysis based on this reading. Also, I am glad to see your significant progress in terms of writing framework and analysis compared with your last response. Besides, I would suggest adding more analysis of filmic techniques, like lens movement, lighting, and set design, which will help to make your writing more solid and convincing.
