Reading Response: Joseph Rosa & Pamela Robertson Wojcik

This response will focus on why Hong Kong is where most of the ghost films in China are produced.

Firstly, Hong Kong had the background of the times to produce ghost films. Hong Kong was influenced by the political attitudes of the mainland, which led to the eagerness of the high class to flee Hong Kong, while the lower and middle classes lived in the midst of hardships suffering from a low level of living – living a life worse than a ghost.

Second, the disparity between the rich and the poor at that time was extremely wide. Because there were too many people and too small space, only the rich could afford to buy a house and only afford to buy graves for dead relatives. The creators also wanted to express the social problems caused by the disparity between the rich and the poor.

There is another less obvious reason. The mainland China government generally does not allow films with too much criticism to be widely spread or to have any negative impacts on teenagers. Because of the different film-making requirements, we can see so many Hong Kong ghost movies about that era today.

You have analyzed and summarized the popularity of production of ghost-themed films in HK based on political, social and economic contexts. Although I appreciate your attempt in analyzing, some of your interpretations may not be correct. Some of your language expressions are weak so that hinders readers from understanding your point of view.
