[Reading Response] – Communal After-Living: Asian Ghosts and the City by Katarzyna Ancuta

In this article, Ancuta explores the relationships between ghosts and humans in Asian cities, as well as the three major themes in Asian ‘apartment horror’ films. These themes include the coexistence of ghosts and the living in a contiguous community, the alienation and fear of loneliness in modern urban lifestyles, and the representation of ghosts as symbols of failed economic dreams that drive rural populations to migrate to cities. I want to focus on the loneliness in modern urban lifestyles because it is more relevant to Hong Kong now. Ancuta mentions that the loneliness that the ghosts feel in movies reflects the isolation of humans. HK has been redeveloped to serve the interests of capitalism rather than ordinary people. It is an international financial global center. I noticed that people walk very fast here, and efficiency is highly valued. Restaurant workers may become impatient if you are hesitant about what you want, which makes me think if people here are truly happy. The answer is probably not. Many ordinary people work 10 hours a day but can only afford to live in ‘Coffin Homes’ due to the high real estate prices. They are like ghosts, hovering around without social lives and a sense of belonging, which is common in metropolises. HK is experiencing an economic downturn, and life for ordinary people will only get harder. I wonder if we will see more movies that depict the lives of these ‘ghosts’ to reflect their struggles in the near future.
