Description
In my previous analysis, I discussed the potential transformation of Central Pier in Hong Kong’s Central district. However, it is important to consider the primary usage of ferry piers as a mode of public transportation before discussing their development. In this video essay, I will focus on exploring the significance of ferry transport for people. For my research, I specifically chose to study the Star Ferry, the oldest form of transportation in Hong Kong that is still in operation today. Among the ferries in the central area, the Star Ferry stands out for providing the shortest route, which could potentially make it more susceptible to being replaced by other modes of transport. I aim to examine the role of the Star Ferry as a public transport option and its importance to the people of Hong Kong.
The Star Ferry Company, which operates ferries across Victoria Harbour, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1888. It is considered the oldest form of public transportation in Hong Kong and holds a special place in the city’s cultural heritage. The iconic Star Ferry is a well-known landmark, often featured in souvenirs and photographs of Hong Kong. The ferry service has also been prominently showcased in films such as the 1960 classic “The World of Suzie Wong” and the popular 2009 film “Push.”
Throughout its history, any proposed changes to the piers or ferry service have sparked significant concern among the local population. In some cases, these concerns have escalated into riots. For example, one riot erupted due to changes in ferry fees, highlighting the deep attachment people have to this mode of transportation. Another riot was linked to the demolition of the Edinburgh Place Ferry Pier, which was the former central pier for Star Ferries. Following its demolition, the pier was relocated to Pier 7.
After conducting an analysis of the Star Ferry’s operations, I discovered that it offers a fascinating ride from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui at a very reasonable price. However, upon observing the density and usage of the ferry, I cannot confidently say that it is particularly popular among locals as a commuting option between the districts. When comparing this route to the MTR, it is evident that the MTR is much more efficient in terms of time and accessibility for locals.
The Star Ferry primarily connects two highly touristic places, making it more favorable for tourists. Not only its location but also the panoramic view of the harborfront along the route adds to its popularity. The scenic views offered by the ferry are beloved by tourists and it is more commonly utilized for leisure purposes rather than as a primary means of transportation.
Methodology and Reflection
In conducting research on the operations of the Star Ferry, I adopted a methodology that involved a blend of direct observation analysis and personal experience. By immersing myself in the daily operations of the ferry service, I was able to gain valuable insights into the usage patterns and passenger behaviors.
My approach began with personally taking multiple rides on different days and at varying times, allowing me to directly observe the diverse range of individuals who choose the ferry. This hands-on experience provided me with real-time data on the motivations behind passengers’ choices, as well as the activities they engage in while on board. Drawing on my own past experiences as a frequent user of the Star Ferry, I brought a personal perspective to the research. Leveraging my familiarity with the service, I could develop informed research questions and make meaningful comparisons with other modes of transport, such as the MTR.
To understand the historical context, I delved into articles detailing the history of the Star Ferry company and its development. I also examined significant public events, such as riots against the Star Ferry, to gain a better understanding of the cultural and historical significance of the service. Additionally, I utilized recent articles on the ferry’s operations, especially those related to the potential closure of the Star Ferry. I found the comments and feedback from people particularly useful as it shed light on the connection that people have with this iconic site. TripAdvisor was helpful in understanding the attitudes of tourists, while newspaper articles provided insights into local viewpoints and opinions on the Star Ferry.
For the video footage, I shot all the ferry scenes on an iPhone 13 and edited them in the DaVinci Resolve app. Additionally, I incorporated shots of newspapers and the MTR system that I came across, as they were invaluable for enhancing the clarity of the representation. To create an immersive and visually pleasing experience, I predominantly utilized wide-angle shots, allowing for a more observational and aesthetically pleasing look. The deliberate choice of a slower pace was instrumental in conveying a sense of nostalgia, effectively capturing the timeless charm of the Star Ferry experience.
This assignment encouraged me to delve deeper into the history behind famous Hong Kong landmarks and to be more specific in my observations, as well as to establish a consistent plan to conduct my research successfully. However, I also encountered certain challenges during the research process. Differentiating and analyzing the passengers on board the Star Ferry was difficult at times, as it was not always clear whether they were tourists or locals. Additionally, I wanted to focus on the behaviors of the passengers, but I struggled with the ethics of filming people in public spaces. This led to a limitation in my video references in order to avoid inconveniencing the public.
Conclusion
The research highlights that while the Star Ferry offers affordable transportation, it is predominantly utilized for leisure purposes rather than as a primary mode of transportation. The ferry holds immense significance in Hong Kong’s cultural heritage and has long-established connections with locals. Additionally, it serves as a delightful entertainment activity for tourists, further enhancing its importance in the bustling city.
