[Field Homework 1] “Home”sick

The home and the room where I have seldomly left over the last month. (wide angle)

The whole bunch of cleaning tools at the door started to be here since the outbreak of the virus. (zoom)

Even at the weekend, the street has significantly fewer people than usuals. (aerial)

Since the virus outbreak, the dog has always been home. (worm’s eye)

What to do next? The most asked question in my mind since the outbreak of the virus. I often just sit on the sofa and do nothing, while struggling in my mind, asking myself what to do, what to eat, any work that is due soon, etc. The outbreak of the virus started about one and a half month ago, knowing that my family does not have enough masks, I seldomly go out, in which I go out once a week, just to grab some food from the restaurant I really like (which does not offer delivery) once in a while. This photo perfectly presents my first-person view most of the time over the past weeks, in which I sit on the sofa. Sometimes I would study Japanese, sometimes I would play games on my Nintendo Switch, sometimes I would do exercises, and sometimes I would be by my computer to chat with my friends online, or struggle with the complicated and tedious online courses. When would the outbreak be actually controlled and stopped? (first-person view)

The weather is great, time to go out and grab some food. (view frame)

Not enough masks. (skewed angle)

It is the weekend, but there are fewer people than usuals. (perspective)

Better be careful of the water from those dirty pipes. (contrast)

Trying to conserve a mask which is used only for an hour. (focus)

Time goes so fast when I am always home, when I have not much to do but looking at the quiet neighborhood. (seriality)

Finally, a new box of masks arrived, only for a month though. (crop)

  1. Eunice says:

Your series of photographs convey your feelings well – boredom, frustration, struggle with online courses etc.
A few of the photographs can be more clearly presented according to the techniques. For example,
Skew – dramatize the skewed angle by positioning your camera lens at an unexpected point/height.
Focus – put the mask in focus by dropping the focus of the surroundings and everything else much more
Chiaroscuro – This stark monochromatic image sets itself apart from the others which are packed with content.
Seriality – These are great. Why not go for a 24-hour series – which will be very powerful in conveying what you have annotated in text – “not much to do but looking at the quiet neighborhood”?
Overall, the images and your annotations/commentary are clear. What new insights have you discovered while being at home all the time?
