Having moved to Sham Shui Po for more than three years now, I’d never stepped in, or even noticed any alleyways. These edged spaces seemed too dangerous for a girl to go in alone. So, I took this project as an opportunity to really understand my community. All the alleyway footage in this film was taken within a 15 minutes’ walk from where I live. Dated back to the 1880s, larger parcels of land rented from the government started to be divided in the middle. The lanes allowed waste disposal, daylight, and air to enter from the back façade.

Since most people past by these spaces, they’re often overlooked. Initially, even I thought there wasn’t much to say other than the space’s simplicity. But, upon closer observation, these spaces carry a lot of history and life. Since Hong Kong as a whole deals with the issue of ‘not having enough space,’ you can start to see how people make use

[Field Homework 3] Ecological City

Theme The assigned site was a ‘rooftop’ which was then expanded upon as “Ecological City”. It explores how despite Hong Kong enduring high levels of pollution as a result of its heavy urbanization, some individual farmers and architects took advantage of unutilized roof spaces for rooftop gardens, known as “green roofs”. Green roofs can be simple as vegetation integrated on top of residential buildings or walkways (such as the new Kai Tak sky garden), or gardens and farms that produces edible produce on the available space. The 2 sites explored – Hysan Place and HKU rooftop garden (now defunct and

Description of theme My assigned space is elevator. Public elevators work more than as lifting devices when transporting people in urban cities. As people have to stay in this narrow and closed space, the elevators have become perfect space to spread information. The study shows that a person would receive 34 Gb of information everyday. Therefore, the ability to catch and filter information has been a helpful skill that every modern citizen should learn. Vision and hearing are the two most important senses we use in normal lives, same in the elevators. These two senses are different: people have the

[Video Essay] Hybrid City

Hybrid City Site: Elevator THEME Question: How to know a hybrid city from an elevator? What makes a city hybrid? From Bruno, we know the city itself is a living creature. A city’s life combines time, light, and weather. It’s a creation of human activity. Human activity can be divided into two parts: private and public, which creates a hybrid city. Walking in a hybrid city, by focusing on the boundary between private and public, we can see people’s different actions in different places. People either stay in their private space or move around in public. It is a reflection

[Reading Response: Christine Boyer]

The perspective of cyberspace from Boyer’s text interested me most, stating that virtual space “deconstruct rather than to duplicate” physical reality. I strongly agree with this because the space created by technology will never be as fulfilling as physical space do. As Boyer also mentioned, cyberspace provides “annihilation of space and time,” I believe space always goes with time. There is a change that only time can give to the space. It can be derived from people’s hands-on experience of living. Therefore, if technological development goes over the speed of people adapting the right way of utilizing the advancement, the
