[Field-Homework 2]DISTANCE

1.ZOOM

A zoom shot to capture a woman using her phone to watch news related to coronavirus – it helps to focus on the woman’s action.

This video is merged by several different shots – from far to near which helps to narrow to the focus point. When it is in the wide shot, it shows that there is only a woman sitting in the middle of a row of the chair, reflecting the loneliness and isolation of the woman. When it is zoomed in to the woman’s phone, it reflected clearly what she is doing – searching news. She is ‘distanced’ with people in real life, however, closely connected with social media, up to date on Hong Kong’s people’s health situation.

2.WORM’S VIEW

A worm’s view shot to capture the walking movement of people – the distance between people relatively high to prevent the spread of viruses, and the number of people taking mtr during peak hours decreases.

3. SLOW MOTION

A slow-motion shot to capture the moment of people are hurrying to escape from crowed – inside of the mtr – as a crowed place will increase the chance of getting infected.

4. CAMERA IS TRACKING, SUBJECT IS STATIC

This video is taken outside the mtr which the panning action captured people’s action and facial expression inside the mtr continuously – people are wearing masks and concentrate on their phones – communication among people is limited.

5. FRAMING

In this video, the door of the mtr is used as a frame to capture the interior mtr and exterior station situation at the same time – a sense of isolation and distance are reflected, people are not energetic and engaged in communication.

  1. Annie Lye says:

Great range of film editing and camera techniques, particularly in video 1. The subject matter is clear and consistent, however, the videos vary between having audio and being muted. Decide on one and keep up with the consistency which you have been demonstrating well in. There appears to be a running theme of transit and communication across these videos and in your text statement. In most, if not all of the videos, we see passengers on their phones, desperately keeping in constant communication, presumably about the latest pandemic news update. If this is so and if you would like to, this is worth expanding upon and keep developing it!
