Title: Disappearing City: Alleyway (Shoe Repair Shop), Shanghai Street
- Traditional cobbling business, rooted in the art of shoe repair and restoration, faces the imminent threat of disappearing in face of modernization
Theme:
The theme of our research and video essay was the disappearing shoe repair shops in the face of modernization. We wanted to explore the challenges faced by traditional cobblers and delve into the reasons behind the decline of their trade. Our project aimed to shed light on the cultural significance of these shops, the craftsmanship involved, and the implications of their disappearance for heritage preservation.
History:
In our research, we discovered that the history of traditional cobbling and shoe repair is rooted in the art of restoring and preserving footwear. It is a time-honored trade that has been passed down through generations, embodying a sense of craftsmanship and expertise. We focused on the historical context of shoe repair shops, their cultural importance, and their role as community hubs.
Description:
When we visited Shanghai Street, we were immediately drawn to the simplicity and utilitarian nature of the storefront’s sign. It communicated only the most important information: the name of the shop, 陳記, and its purpose, repairing shoes, 補鞋. The shop owner was diligently working, surrounded by tools and a chair for customers to sit on while they waited. The narrow and confined space of the shop emphasized the purity and commitment of the traditional cobbling business. We captured both close-up and wide range shots of the shop owner and the various products and tools used in the cobbling process, showcasing the craftsmanship and dedication involved.
Method:
Our research involved multiple visits to Shanghai Street, as we felt the Field Trip was insufficient. We felt like we walked past everything too quickly and we couldn’t find a subject that held cultural significance and was at risk of disappearing within the next ten years. When we stumbled upon the shoe repair shop, we knew we had found our focus. We conducted interviews with the shop owner and conducted further secondary research online to uncover the challenges faced by traditional cobblers and the reasons behind the decline of their trade.
Camera Technique Used:
To effectively convey the story, we employed various camera techniques in our photographs and video essay. We focused on the storefront’s sign in the first photograph, drawing attention to its simplicity and utilitarian nature. The second photograph provided an overview of the shop’s layout and emphasized the shop owner as the central subject. We captured close-up shots in the third and fourth photographs to highlight the details of the shop owner’s work and the tools used in the cobbling process. The final photograph captured the broader view of the shop owner and her workspace, showcasing the surrounding environment and the context of the cobbling business.
Reflection:
Reflecting on our research and the production of the video, this project provided me with a deeper appreciation for the value of traditional crafts and the challenges they face in a rapidly changing world. It allowed me to explore the intersection of culture, heritage, and urban development, shedding light on the impact of societal shifts on traditional trades.
Through our research, I gained insights into the reasons behind the decline of shoe repair shops, including the aging workforce, changes in consumer behavior, and the lack of sustainability in modern shoe manufacturing. I also discovered the cultural and social significance of these shops, serving as community hubs and preserving craftsmanship.
Producing the video essay was a creative endeavor that required careful storytelling and visual representation. It was important for us to strike a balance between conveying the seriousness of the issue and evoking a sense of nostalgia and admiration for the craft. We aimed to engage viewers emotionally and intellectually, prompting them to reflect on the importance of preserving traditional trades and supporting artisans.
In conclusion, our research and the resulting video essay provided a platform to explore the disappearing shoe repair shops and the broader implications of the decline of traditional trades. It allowed me to contribute to the conversation about cultural preservation, craftsmanship, and the need to find innovative solutions to ensure the sustainability of these valuable aspects of our heritage.
