Title: Complex City
Site: K11 MUSEA
“How K11 MUSEA direct affects human clothing style” — Initial Analysis
The background of the theme topic
The assigned site was initially a “mall”, later expanded upon as “Complex City”. The project explores how Hong Kong’s luxurious shopping mall affects human clothing styles and habits. It is possible that the aesthetics of a building could influence the way people dress, but this would likely depend on several factors. For example, if a building has a very formal and traditional design, people may be more likely to dress in a way consistent with that style, such as wearing suits or dresses. On the other hand, if a building has a more casual and modern design, people may be more likely to dress in a more relaxed and informal way.
Various films inspired me to approach the themes of “Kingsman.” In the Kingsman movies, the main characters of the Royal Secret Service wear their suits with style and a touch of humour. Traditional British suits are flattering and slim-waisted to emphasize a man’s proportions. In the movies, the Kingsman often wear various thick striped ties to match their thin striped suits, giving them a no-nonsense, dignified look. No matter how fierce the fight, the tie knot never loosens to reveal the shirt. Cultural differences can have a significant impact on the way people dress in different buildings. Different cultures have varying expectations and norms regarding appropriate attire for other settings, such as workplaces, religious buildings, or social events. Therefore, when individuals from different cultures enter a building, they may interpret the appropriate dress code differently based on their cultural background and experiences.
Methodology
To begin my research for the video project, I delved into literature on the psychology of clothing and people. I came across an article titled “Comfort Assessment in the Context of sustainable buildings: Comparison of Simplified and detailed human thermal sensation methods” (Holopainen et al., 2014), which caught my attention and was relevant to my research theme. The article explored examples of human clothing in Hong Kong and provided an in-depth context behind the building structure, revealing various people’s mindsets and the complexities of the city.
This article inspired me to prepare for my fieldwork and choose Tsim Sha Tsui (K11 MUSEA) as my research site. I decided this mall because it offered a unique experience compared to other shopping malls in Hong Kong. The building structure exuded affluence and stood out as a new Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade landmark.
Malls have traditionally held a significant social space in Hong Kong, a city renowned for its bustling streets, cramped apartment living, and love of retail therapy. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third places” to describe communal spaces where people can gather and feel connected outside their homes and workplaces. In Hong Kong, shopping malls have become popular third places where people can relax, socialize, and shop to escape the busy city life.
The K11 MUSEA mall is a perfect example of a third place, providing a unique experience that merges culture and commerce. The mall’s building structure and design are eye-catching and reflect its developer, Adrian Cheng’s vision for a communal space that fuses culture and business. The mall’s architecture collaborates with top architecture firms that aim to create a Silicon Valley of culture, enriching consumers’ lives through innovation, culture, and creativity.
K11 MUSEA provides a new era for retail stores, giving customers new experiences when they enter the mall. The mall features innovative retail spaces incorporating art and culture into the shopping experience. It offers a wide range of high-end fashion brands, gourmet restaurants, and cultural exhibitions that reflect local and global culture. The mall’s design also incorporates sustainable practices, aligning with the building concept mentioned in the article.
Video editing technique
To provide a luxurious atmosphere for K11 MUSEA, I plan to incorporate sound effects and background music in my video. I will carefully select music that complements the mall’s unique design and reflects its vision of merging culture and commerce. The music will aim to provide customers with a relaxing and enjoyable shopping experience.
To help viewers quickly navigate the attractions at K11 MUSEA, I will include subtitles indicating the names of different places. I will also use the “video stacking” technique to create smooth transitions between shots, revealing the lower shot as the upper shot disappears. These techniques will provide a more dynamic and engaging video experience, highlighting the unique features of K11 MUSEA and making it easier for viewers to explore the mall’s attractions.
In my video, I compared K11 MUSEA and iSquare’s building structures and the clothing people wear in each mall. K11 MUSEA’s luxurious design attracts diverse customers, while iSquare’s traditional structure offers more affordable retail options. By highlighting these differences, I aimed to showcase the unique features of each location and offer viewers a glimpse into Tsim Sha Tsui’s vibrant culture.

You have an interesting topic with a selected site that matches with you research question. However, the way you define the building styles as well as the fashion styles are arbitrary. Your submission falls into over-generalization and stereotyping, thus making a concluding statement too quickly. Holding a more conservative in the hypothesis stage shall help you to improve your work next time.
