[Field-Homework 3] Management City

Title: management city —— empty park

In the Coronavirus pandemic, doing activities in the open air seems like a luxury. Fortunately, this is a virus-free city, a city where people can still walk on the streets. But compared with the past, the busy park seems to be quieter and less cheerful. In the time period that originally   should be crowded and noisy (after the summer dinner, 18:30), the huge civil square seems lonely and empty. Is this a limitation of the city to its citizens, or it’s just a limitation of citizens to themselves?

“In a city that can claim to have good governance, people know exactly what they need to do and what they can’t do, and they don’t need instructions from the government.” —I said that

The park was a good place to go after dinner, but it is empty during the pandemic. Strangely, however, there is no virus in the city, and the city has not banned anyone from going outside, so why is there no one in the otherwise busy park? I tried to show people the orderly side of the city, and I decided to do it by contrast. In the first half of the video, I showed what the park should look like before the pandemic, and then in the second half, I showed what the park should look like during the pandemic, and this change reflects what a managed city should look like.

The city seems quiet at this moment, but it is not lonely. Judging from the bright lights and the flashing tall buildings, it is a prosperous and economically developed city. However, the prosperity of the city is not only material, not only reflected in the night lights and skyscrapers, but also in the spirit of the city. And this spiritual outlook is reflected in the citizens’ trust in the city and its management.

In fact, I shot all of the videos during the pandemic, after dinner time, which should have been the busiest time in the park. Before the pandemic, there were probably thousands of people in the park, and there were hundreds just dancing in the middle of the square. However, during the epidemic period, there were only a few people in the park every day, but these numbers could not meet my desire to show how busy the park is, so I would go there every night, so I spent several days shooting the first half of the video. The latter part you can see it was a rainy day. Although there were few people when it was not raining, it could not achieve the effect of no one in the park. Therefore, I deliberately chose to shoot it on a rainy day, and as expected there was no one in the park, but the picture was somewhat affected.

Reflection: I did almost nothing to the videos, except speeding up and cropping. In the second part, in order to get a stable picture, I specially used a tripod to assist, but due to my poor shooting ability, the picture was very shaky, and the final effect was not as good as I expected and did not reflect the silence of empty.

So, finally, just enjoy the silence of the city.

As you titled the piece Management City, I wonder how you have explored the various aspects of management in the park? How do you relate emptiness to management? You have displayed some level of contrast in the park but it is not extensively analyzed. It would be great if you could delve deeper into your question: is the emptiness a limitation of the city to its citizens, or it’s just a limitation of citizens to themselves?
