The movie Veteran deals with the police catching rich people who commit corruption and evil. In this movie, various architectural elements were used to maximize these contents and to help the audience sympathize more. These architectural elements also have the same effect as how we normally see and feel buildings. This element that appeared in the movie is the city as the background. At the beginning of the play, the rich describe their lives. At the same time, it illuminates the surroundings of the building they live in, which is a city consisting of various high-rise buildings and shopping malls. According to the reading, space is consisted of ‘intersections of mobile elements.’(De Certeau. 1984). In other words, space is not simply a place, but is formed by movement in the place. Therefore, the space of the city also recognizes the city as a splendid space through various economic activities, developments, and movements of the human moon. Therefore, it emphasizes and delivers the spectacular life of the rich to the audience in this movie.
On the contrary, architectural elements that we normally perceive are sometimes used in different directions in movies. It’s the darkness in the city. As mentioned earlier, we consider the city a symbol of splendor. In fact, many people in modern times have a high desire to move to cities. As if to disprove such a desire, the word urbanization has emerged, and the number of population movements is increasing. However, in this movie, rich people commit various crimes in the city. Also in the end, these rich people are caught by the police. This ending is different from the luxurious life that the rich usually enjoy. Through these contents, the darkness of the splendor of the space of the city is conveyed to the audience.
Furthermore, cities are used as symbols of power. There are various tall buildings in the city. The reason is that as the population density increases, there is not enough space for people to live. However, apart from this reason, people prefer high spaces. The reason is voyeurism. voyeurism refers to the behavior of observing others, where the observer is not exposed. Observation gives visual information, so people prefer voyeurism. High-rise buildings are the places in the city that satisfy this voyeurism. The higher the building, the more you can look down and contain more visual information. Therefore, if you look around the building where the rich and rich live in the movie, you can see that it is a high-rise building. This indirectly shows the power they have to the audience through the monopoly of high-rise buildings and visual information.
As such, a single space called a city plays various roles in the movie. Communicate information through facts about the space we normally know, or deliver effective stories through the difference we have from general impression of the space. Furthermore, space has its own effect on its urban buildings. Through this project, I learned that one space can be used in different directions in movies. Hence, I realized that I could convey sympathetic content to the audience without necessarily changing the space. Therefore, I think I will carefully look at more architectural elements when I watch movies in the future.

A discussion of the 2015 film directed by Ryoo Seung-wan through studying the architectural aspects in it such as the highrise buildings and lighting. It is not clear what is the “fieldwork” that has been conducted. Did you visit any space/s in Seoul that is in the film to study how it is in actuality so as to understand how the film has captured it and what was changed or manipulated to emphasize the plot narrative? If you did not conduct a field trip in person, did you do so virtually, i.e. “visit it” through other people (media reports, personal blogs, videos, etc.) who had done it? The fieldwork is important as it will allow you to reflect on your own question: “space has its own effect on its urban buildings.” How is this statement similar or different in the movie Veteran and in real life as experienced by people who visit or use these buildings? Then there will be more sources that you will be referencing for this fieldwork report. Also, do make good use of images from the film and/or actual sites/spaces in the essay to support your analysis (see assignment guidelines).
