Field Trip 1 (Street in Wanchai)

‘Chiaroscuro’

This picture utilizes the technique of chiaroscuro. This photo was taken to mainly represent the difference between the rich and the poor. As you can see in this picture, the architectures in the front are basically dark. This darkness is meant to represent normal people who aren’t that wealthy. In contrast, the buildings in the back are brighter than the buildings in the front. They are different from typical housings in Hong Kong by the use of meticulous designs. These two contrasting types of buildings were used to indicate the problem of rich and poor in Hong Kong.

I like the Wide Angle Shot that captures the whole market, especially on the contrast of the red, the busy street, versus gray, mundane pale looking residential blocks. Some of your photos convey a stronger message than others, be aware of choosing a specific subject matter when taking the photos. Whether it is the man in the Worm’s Eye Shot or the sign in the Focus Shot, it is important to position the main subject matter in contrast with their surrounding in order to convey a stronger narrative through your photos.
