Field Trip 2 (Central Escalators)

‘Camera is Static’

Films represent architectures that we encounter in everyday life. In the movie Chungking Express(1994), the midlevel escalator is utilized as the main setting. It shows how an everyday space where people pass by could be used to display a specific story line. After the movie was released, Chungking Express became famous for how it related the subject of loneliness and companionship. The movie just didn’t have an impact on the film industry, but it also influenced the mid-level escalator to become one of the most famous tourist sights in Hong Kong.

In this video, I wanted to depict the mid-level escalator at a different point of view. I just did not want to capture the view from the escalator, but the view containing both the mid-level escalator, signs of shops and red taxi, which are all symbols that represent Hong Kong. In order to capture these views in a single video, I placed the camera static so that it could take all the symbols representing Hong Kong.

‘Framing’
Used the balcony of the mid-level escalator to depict the escalators beneath the hill.

‘Camera is Tracking’
Camera is tracking the buildings which are static from the mid-level escalator.

‘Isolation’
The people coming up from the escalator are all coming up at the same speed, while the people going down are going at different speed.

‘Camera is placed in a suprising location’
Placed the camera 80 degrees to capture the lanterns which are next to the mid-level escalator.

Your first shot looks fantastic, you should have stayed with the topic of neon signs, or slightly over-saturated city scapes so that all other clips match the aesthetic.
