My Prince Edward is a Hong Kong love story. Fong works in a bridal gown shop in Golden Place. She has a boyfriend who also works in Golden Plaza. Golden Plaza is a ‘wedding mall’. It is in Prince Edward. It has many wedding-related shops which offer products and services at cheap prices.
10 years ago, Fong has a sham marriage with Yang Shuwei, who is a mainlander. However, they are not divorced because their agent was arrested and so they lost contact since then. As Fong and Edward are going to get married, Fong has an urgent need to get a divorce from Yang Shuwei. When Fong was getting along with Yang, she is impressed by Yang’s attitude towards freedom. Therefore, she starts reflecting on her relationship with Edward who is possessive and does not care much about Fong’s feelings. Finally, Fong decides to leave Edward and have a new life.
Golden Plaza is presented in the film in several ways. First, the film shows the outside of the building. The audience could see where Golden Plaza is located and the neon sign of the building. Secondly, the film takes the audience to have a look at what types of shops Golden Plaza has, such as wedding decoration shops and bridal gown shops. This lets us know that Golden Plaza is a wedding mall. In addition, Golden Plaza is also where Fong and Edward live. Their living environment is bad because the building is old. The film shows the reality of Golden Plaza. As the director, Norris Wong, lives near Golden Plaza since she was young, it may be one of the reasons why the building is presented almost the same as the reality.
The image of Golden Plaza fits the message and topic of this film well. As ‘marriage’ is the element that connects the whole film, using Golden Plaza could emphasize this topic. Also, when Fong decides to leave Edward, she also quit the job of bridal gown shop staff in Golden Plaza. This could portray that marriage is a cage and restriction for Fong. When she does not see marriage as a prerequisite in her life, she could finally be free on the mental level. Also, the living condition in Golden Plaza also talks about one of the problems in marriage. Fong wants to live in new private housing that has a better living environment. However, Edward and his mother want to live in Golden Plaza because its house price is cheaper. Fong is very disappointed with their decision and this becomes one of the reasons why Fong leaves Edward. It shows that the housing problem is a big problem in marriage.

I would suggest simplifying the plot introduction and paying more attention to figuring out your field observation and comparative analysis. And it is great to access your fieldwork through newspapers, interviews, housing advertising, etc., which will strengthen your work intellectually. You may dig deeper through those lines as well as filming techniques. Furthermore, associating your report with the ideas/theories/concepts of coursework might make your writing more critical and reflective.
