L1 Reading Response – Barthes

According to the ‘Leaving the Movie Theater’ by Roland Barthes, he describes the cinematic experience as “hypnotic”. I highly agree with his expression of watching a film at the cinema as I also felt engulfed and overwhelmed whenever I have finished a movie at the theater. Especially in this era of high technology, the innovation of 4DX has been implemented. Within 4DX, cinemas offer multi-sensory hypnotic effect. While the film was only confined to the screen before 4DX, nowadays the enhanced ambience and multi-dimensional effects draws audiences into the movie. I would like to shed a light on the positive aspect of this hypnotic experience as some audiences may need a separation from the reality. The time at the theater could offer them a evasion from the reality.

I appreciate your sincere personal reflection. I would suggest you dig your reflection deeper based on the title “Leaving the Movie Theater”, especially the term “leave.” Also, I am looking forward to hearing more about how you situate yourselves during watching films in the theater. For example, how do falling into the cinematic ideological world? And how do you dispose the situation of “two bodies” during watching films in the theater? Furthermore, it is worth more discussion about the space, environment, and atmosphere of theater to strengthen your analysis.
