Engaging in the design of architecture I always believe that architecture is timeless. They exist in different eras in the same form but with different roles. The author mentioned that preservation is selective and tends to exclude the dirt and pain. So is there any way preservation can include memory? Izosaki and Asada’s typology separates architecture into real, surreal, and hyper-realistic architecture. Only those that have preserved their historical contexts are real, which means real architecture only exists in the rather old areas where the buildings still serve the same function as when it was built. (because urban hybridized areas are surreal as there is no regard of historical context) In my opinion, the best way to make the city real is to develop new architecture aware of its context. For example, when we make architectural developments in villages, architects can learn the existing local techniques from the locals and also allow the locals to contribute their opinions to the project. This may be hard to achieve in a city like Hong Kong as people are always caught up in their business and developments are highly controlled by the capital.
