Abbas’s reading put out an interesting idea that we should be selective when persevering cultural architecture and think more about the cultural aspects of architecture. In the article, the author mentioned that in Hong Kong nowadays treat buildings as commodity and just let the market mechanism affect architecture. And as a result, those building that get well preserved or get the most exposure might not sufficiently represent Hong Kong culture. For instance, the Junk in Vitoria Harbor might often be seen in many movies and these famous architectures appear in the movie might be the first cultural impression of Hong Kong for many people. But that Junk might not fully display the complex cultural identity of Hong Kong as a Chinese city that being ruled by British government for many years. So, this article makes us reflect on these questions: Can what we do to persevere the architecture really help persevere the local culture? Does the film really display the Hong Kong culture among those “famous buildings”?

Good summary and reflection. I wonder how you would answer the two questions you raised? How do you evaluate whether a preservation is done well?
