Reading Response: Ackbar Abbas

The unrecognizable city in its continue redeveloping under the economic and political incentive that the city always presented as an ‘international’ image, the ‘mixing tradition and modernity like memory and desire gives people an confusion of the city’s identity. As an ‘invisible city’ that is built on contingency, geographic and historical incidents, both local communities and architectural vernacular buildings should be preserved to contain the space inherited from the commoners or powerless every day life and colonial space not only the sense of deja vu. Rather than selection way of preservation, conservation should come to manage the pace of change of the city, by understanding the historical and social content of the community and the building. Revitalizing building could  be done in transforming the usage of building, changing the structure to attain a economical or social sustainable environment for the future generation.

A thoughtful reflection of Abbas’ critical commentary on disappearance and preservation, good job!
