[Reading Response: Ackbar Abbas]

In the article, Abbas explores the disappearance of Hong Kong’s culture and history at a special time when politics changing. The old buildings are replaced by a new style of architecture that can fit the new environment in Hong Kong. Since the economic situation is different and the increasing number of population, the old architecture is not able to satisfy the new demand of society.
Within the disappearance of old buildings, the history of the city progressively vanishes, although there are preservations, it is not in the right way. The preservations only remain the outlook of old buildings while the inside part has been changed. The old buildings not only represent the history of the city, but also the culture. Although the reading mentioned preservation is not memory, instead, it is selective and tends to exclude the dirt and pain. There should be better ways of preservation to maintain old places in people’s lives to protect the history of the city.

A thoughtful reflection on Abbas’ notion of preservation. For the sake of collective memory, history and cultural identity, how do you think there could be better ways of preservation?
