This reading is mainly talk about two types of city, which is generic and exorbitant city. These might be not a words that people use often, but this is just s word that use to show the style of the city. Cinema portrait the characteristic of those cities. As an example, I could see the characteristic of the exorbitant city, which is a type of city that fulls of buildings and light that looks like a maze. Hong Kong has more of this type of style and this shown a lot in those previous Hong Kong film. On the otherhand generic cities are planned when they first created. Those cities seems more organied and we could see that those building are arranged very well. Many films showing the characteristic. In the film mission impossible series, they shown various cities while showing the action of the main characters. Just like mission impossible, many movies shows style of the characters that some movies are very colorful and some are very organized.

  1. Eunice says:

Can the “exorbitant city” coexist with “the generic city”? To what extent do you see this as already happening in Hong Kong or another city that you are familiar with. Generic cities can certainly be planned cities, but there are cities who have or are fast becoming generic in character. Clarify your point on the Mission Impossible films. Do you mean to say that the films present the generic character of the various cities that they are shot in? Or otherwise?
