The author is really accurate about Hong Kong even 20 years later. He criticizes how capitalism and the market erodes “place”. Nowadays apartments are built for making money instead of a home for the people, big corporations are controlling every land. Television is going to make people “numb”, allegory is no longer important than the surface of things. Nowadays people are obsessed with the internet, unlimited entertainment distract us from understanding others. Local culture is no longer an important thing because of how we are “connected” to the world. The author also states that it is impossible to see the city in an appropriate way in modern-day. I think the reason he says this is because of the information we are receiving is not fact anymore, most of the news are straight up opinion, so how could we view anything appropriately? While most of the people just giving in their minds.

You have made big statements on current situation of Hong Kong culture. Your strong opinion shows you feel deeply on the problems. Yet, to fully convince your audience, you should explain your statements more extensively. For example, how does unlimited entertainment distract us from understanding others and local culture? Is it really the case? As Abbas’ said, the way history is narrated in an over-simplified way, namely ‘the East meets West’ is dangerous. I would love to see how you find support for your statements, as well as revealing lesser-known issues in local culture. Big, stereotypical statements would lead to the reinforcement of the statement ‘Hong Kong is a cultural desert’.
