Reading Response: Ackbar Abbas

What disappeared? What appeared? Before reading this article, the answer I can give is that old buildings have disappeared and new buildings have appeared. There is a high probability that I can also answer that the culture contained and represented by the old buildings has disappeared. But after reading this article, I will give an additional answer, that is, people’s sense of belonging to the city of Hong Kong is disappearing. The ever-changing Central is no longer what the old Hong Kong people remember. What has disappeared is not only the buildings, but also the memories of these people about the old Central. Without these memories, Hong Kong is just the city they live in now and no longer It is the so-called hometown, and then there is no sense of belonging to Hong Kong.
Of course, I am not saying that we cannot make changes to the architecture. What is important is how to preserve these cultures, these memories, and this sense of belonging to the greatest extent after the changes. In my opinion, film is definitely one of the most powerful tools. Using movie recordings, of course, I am not referring to those Hollywood blockbusters, but the “exclusive memories” edited and synthesized from the clips we recorded in our daily lives. I think this is the reason why I want to take this course so far.

  1. Putri Santoso says:

A thoughtful reflection on how the sense of belonging to the city has changed. An elaboration on this would strengthen your argument! Would you think it has anything to do with what Abbas’ pointed out on p.71 on how “[A] second sense of disappearance concerns representation” and “[T]he way the city has been made to appear in many representations in fact works to make it disappear”? Abbas’ reference to the “Situationists” remarks on the city’s visual aspect and its relation to the psychological effects generated by it (p.76) can also reinforce your argument on the preservation of the city’s memories.
