Reading Response: Carl Abbott

After the reading, I was able to understand Carl Abbott’s vision for the future cities. Since young, I have been watching a lot of science fiction films. I think people are enthusiastic about science fiction films because they show things those are not feasible with current technologies. Thus, I never thought about different forms of cities. However, Carl Abbott’s article made me to think again about the future cities.

The article explains different forms of cities by providing several examples. One example that I liked was ‘distributed city’. The city is formed with airships, just like the sci-fi films I saw. I liked the term “moving city” since I thought geographical problems will always follow when considering the form of cities. A different moving city is also described in the “riding the rails” part. Snowepiercer is a train but it is also a city. The train travels endless rails and people live inside the train followed by their classes. As I read this article, I realized that the city we are seeing nowadays will change someday and change into various forms. Over time, technological problems will gradually be solved, and then, geographical problems will also be solved naturally. Therefore, I believe that cities in science fiction films are feasible in the future, those are no longer imaginations.

In fact, the world we are living in right now seems rarely presented in sci-fi films before. I always wonder if sci-fi films can correctly predict the future. What is wrong with this trajectory of human evolution? How come it always deviates from film predictions?
