On one hand, Chinese people treated our cultures and our arts forms very seriously, for example shadow plays, since those were preserved and developed for thousands of years, containing the hard-works from generation to generation. We preferred to stick on them rather than giving them up. On the other hand, other products in film industries made by western countries had pretty outcomes and influences. They had their own ideas, aesthetics and technologies to produce films. Especially those technologies in America (and Russia), they were able to work soundly for films they made. Those pros were quite attractive for Chinese filmmakers that time. At the end, Chinese kept our traditions and used those ideas, strategies and technologies, such as montage and long take at the same time in that age.
