[Reading Response: Michel de Certeau]

From the essay, Michel de Certeau tries to define space and places. In short, space is practiced place, a place is an instantaneous configuration of positions, which is a stable definition. Space considers vectors of direction, velocity and time variables, which is a combination of different elements. Stories can carry out labor transforming places into spaces and vice versa. Space is formed when a walker has a memory of a place and gives a special story to it. Stories can also control the relationships between places and spaces. The essay then discusses the distinction between maps and tour, I think they are different understanding of living space, maps are like the citation of spaces and tour is like the divine of a person’s actions or change of locations in the space. As for the marking of boundaries, in my opinion, boundaries are more likely to be metaphorical like the boundaries between countries which might be national but not physically existence of some blocks like mountains or rivers.

Thoughtful reflection on the relationship between space, place and time. Yes, while there are metaphorical boundaries, most tend to be created by institutional power (by governments, corporations or other institutions of power). And this form of boundaries are the ones that de Certeau is proposing that must be contested and challenged through tactical acts in ordinary everyday existence.
