Reading Response: Michel de Certeau

“Space” and “Place”

“Space” is location, physical space and physical geography. It has taken consideration of vector of direction, velocities, and time variables. Hence, it is made up of mobile element intersections. “Space” is meaningless and has no meaning or value. It’s like a blank canvas, it is nothing and everything at the same time.

“Place” has meaning and value, and it has a context. It serves a purpose. It is comprised of both tangible and intangible elements. “Place” is like the painting on the canvas, it gives “space” a meaning and values. It is the culturally imposed meaning assigned to a space. It’s the “vibe” you get from a certain place, and it’s there for a reason.

“Tour” and “Map”

“Tour” is more of three dimensional compared with “map”. A tour involves showcasing everything in a certain place. In movies, it guides the audience to see the surroundings. Whereas a “map” only tells the audience what is in that place or let you know how to reach another certain location rather than showcasing the whole area.

  1. Jen Lam says:

Both space and place have their value. Place usually has a stronger identity – name, regulations, location whereas space allows people to conduct activities in it. Sometimes space can be practised as a place and sometimes vice versa. Regarding the comparison between tour and map, do you think tour also involves the fourth dimension of time?
