[Reading Response: Pamela Wojcik]

This reading by Pamela Wojcik presented a different perspective about the Apartment Plot. I was convinced that apartment as a setting can leave an undeniable impact to the movie. First, the character. In an apartment plot, the character is often limited by the historical content of the setting. For example, the characters in the mid-1900s apartment plot could be limited to white, middle-class man who lives in a rather small city. The setting helps to understand the general action and ethnicity of the characters. Second, the plot. By the nature of the apartment, the plot of the movie included encounter scenes between residents. I liked the idea of anonymity was blended well in those scenes, which lead to more suspense and interesting plot points for later parts of the movie. Third, the ideals. The settings reflect the idea of urbanism of each historical / national background. When comparing the settings from different country and timeline, I could see clear differences of the themes that movies carry and problems that movie reflects.

A very good reflection. Appreciate your synthesis of the three points: 1. on the apartment setting and identity of time, class, ethnicity/race etc. 2. On its relationship to the plot and 3. idea of urbanism and collective (e.g. national) aspirations/ideals. Can you think of a film that you have recently watched where the apartment/house reflect the idea of the urbanism?
