Personally, I can relate to the dazed and confused feeling Roland Barthes describes after watching the movie and leaving the theatre. Yet, the shift in our focus toward movies throughout time has changed our viewing experience as well. In the past, going to the movies was our major form of entertainment. But, today, it serves as only a small part of our day. Movies do not imprint a lasting impression on us as much as before. Especially with technological advancement, it has enhanced, yet robbed our cinematic viewing experience. Being able to watch movies “on the go” with Netflix or Disney+ has brought us physically closer to the film, yet further away from the experience. The wide selection of movies we get from a Netflix subscription might seem more financially worth it than a movie ticket in the cinema when it can be easily accessed online for free. Our need for speed has changed how we view films, yet it is not all bad. While we certainly go to the cinema less frequently, the occasional movies shown in the movie theatre does leave a lasting impression on us and bring back the dazed and surreal feeling we get after the movie.
