Reading Response: Roland Barthes

Owing to the dark environment of the cinema as well as the sound and music of the movie, the author of “Leaving the Movie Theater” claims that attending the movie theater enables individuals to feel hypnotized. According to the author, the “twilight reverie” prefigures the dark environment of the movie theater and leads the person into a dimly lit cube where hypnosis can occur and where the body’s freedom is generated. People are relaxed and healed in the movie theater, away from the urban city. The comparison of the experience of watching Netflix at home versus at a cinema is also emphasized in the passage. In contrast to the familiar and articulate space at home, the dark environment in the cinema invites people towards the movie’s world and allows them to become immersed in it. It is vital that audiences can entirely concentrate on the fascinating content of the film. I also find that watching movies in the theater during my free time is the ideal method of relaxation.

  1. Yin Chun Gilbert says:

You summarized the reading very well with strong descriptive language skills. Most of the key concepts introduced in the reading are recapped in your response. Yet, I would like to remind you treating historical writings more carefully when using it in a contextual discussion of today: the reading did not discuss NETFLIX as these kinds of streaming platforms of products of this era not back in the time when the passage was written. Moreover, would like to hear more of your personal reflection and thoughts.
