The author has addressed concepts like ‘everyday tactics’, ‘place and space’, ‘boundaries and frontier’ through explaining their meaning and making differentiation between elements being superficially similar.
The fact that “space is a practiced place” as stated in page 117 extends to the meanings that a place becomes a space when there is operations and mobility. This provokes my thoughts that it also applies to one’s memory. While the territory with memories is bounded with barriers and frontiers, the memory tied in the place functions as a catalyst rather than solely a backdrop to transform itself as a space. Hence space radiates the sense of ‘sacredness’, meaning that it should be kept as a ‘utopia-like area’ that keeps the humanized flow, delicate memory and relationship inside the spatial territory.
I also reflected that there is an interdependent relationship between these seemingly isolated elements like “story”, “narration” and “place and space”. Even though we witness a fragmentation of place due to different societal condition, like the 1997 reunification of Hong Kong and China, all of the elements mutually shaped each other. For instance, in the movie Little Cheung, through adapting the boy’s voiceover narration which is set in the grass-root neighborhood space, it evokes viewer’s collective memory and nostalgia living in similar areas, thus deepen the two-way exchange of visualization and enhance emotional connection between audiences and the movie, establishing a story.
I appreciate that you write about memory ties to De Certeau’s spatial stories. Your writing needs a lot of elaboration. Here is my feedback: 1/ Through your Paragraph, ‘…the memory tied in the place functions as a catalyst rather than solely a backdrop to transform itself as a space. Hence space radiates the sense of ‘sacredness’, meaning that it should be kept as a ‘utopia-like area’ that keeps the humanized flow, delicate memory and relationship inside the spatial territory.’ You should address how memory becomes space and how this spatial memory becomes sacredness. How does memory relate to De Certeau’s spatial practice? 2/ You should also elaborate on the below point and how it relates to De Certeau’s spatial practice. ‘…in the movie Little Cheung, through adapting the boy’s voiceover narration which is set in the grass-root neighborhood space, it evokes viewer’s collective memory and nostalgia living in similar areas, thus deepen the two-way exchange of visualization and enhance emotional connection between audiences and the movie, establishing a story.’
