[Reading Response] Spatial Stories, by Michel de Certeau

This article talks about the difference between place and space, moving from structure to action, the bipolar distinction of maps and itineraries, the procedures of delimitation or “marking boundaries” and “enunciative focalization”.

Space itself exists objectively, but people give it meaning and value through their subjective perceptions, experiences and cultural backgrounds, which leads to as many different spaces as there are people.

Tour descriptions are more focused on operational and experiential awareness; they show the listener the location by describing specific actions and perceptual details, and are dynamic. In contrast, the map description is more objective and static as it focuses on providing information about the layout and structure of the place. In addition, I believe that the narrator’s use of different descriptions is related to the narrator’s purpose; when the narrator wants to capture the audience’s attention, tour descriptions are more appropriate because they are more vivid, emotional, and engaging, and the listener puts himself/herself into the situation; whereas, map descriptions are more appropriate for providing accurate information and explaining geographical relationships, and map descriptions are more rational. Using different descriptions to speak about the same space gives the listener a different feeling.

Itinerary is analogous to space in that it has moving elements and is dynamic; Map is analogous to place in that it is fixed, natural, and static.

Good grasp of distinct writing styles for tour and map descriptions and the expected effect on the audience. Very colorful descriptions that extend the stylistic flourish of the author. Do you think, other than these methods, there may be a third way to read the city? What do you think it could be?

Thank you for your comment. In my opinion, the essence of tourism description and map description is to describe a place by describing the action and presenting the picture respectively. For read the city, both descriptions are physical interpretations. Non-physical interpretations can also give visitors a better understanding of the city, such as its culture and history.
