Reading Response: Walter Benjamin

The main point I focus on is Benjamin’s proof that reproduction works lack authenticity, which is an important characteristic of the artwork. Benjamin reasoned that the reproduction work is independent of original work and hold characteristics different from original artwork. I think it’s fully conceivable since the song sung by a chorus could be originally only available in open space like church, but now could be recorded and be enjoyed in a private room. This really makes a big difference in the aesthetic perspective of the song. This opinion also suits the quintessence ranging from physical duration and historical testimony mentioned in the following paragraphs. One thing that fascinates me is, though Benjamin holds a negative tone in describing reproduction work, as well as film, he still thinks critically. He claims film to be vulnerable to aesthetic politics but also admits that film is a very good tool to convey ideas and mediate people from the new age.

I appreciate how you could see that different viewpoints were portrayed in Benjamin’s piece. He had demonstrated dialectic writing which is to look at the subject matter from various perspectives to seek the truth. I would love to see how you critically analyse and respond to the readings beyond showing your understanding. For example, you can raise the questions or doubts you have when you go through the text.
