[Field-Homework 2] Uncanny Streets

Through an ordinary infrastructure — streets, we can have a glimpse of how the epidemic outbreak shows a sense of crisis in the city. And streets in different viewing points and compositions can convey the uncanny feel in different ways.

1.

A narrow street in late afternoon. It appears shady, along with the vehicles and pedestrians.

2.

A confined underground walk during rush hour, with groups of people strolling.

3.

A broad street between blocks of flats, through which a man walks with bags of shopping.
Description: This video features of a broad street and its urban background, which are static. However, the only detailed pedestrian, who seems to be a shopper, is shown walking towards the main road. In this video, I try to reinforce a sense of emptiness by choosing a quiet and broad street, while a shopper with household supplies reminds us of an unstable period and crises. Beside the wide background and the combination of static and moving subjects, I also use perspective to lead viewers’ eyes to the distance, into a larger cityscape and certainly, into a stronger sense of crisis.

4.

The camera panning along the street, showing a line of closed shops.

5.

A quiet back alley at dusk, with a worker collecting rubbish.

  1. Annie Lye says:

Appreciate the attempt at showcasing streets as your subject matter focus. You demonstrated a beginning understanding and experimentation with camera techniques. This could be pushed even further and be creative with it! Think outside of the box and consider how the urban street scenes might NOT normally be seen (e.g. worm’s eye view, skewed, ZOOM/CROP!) Well done on video 3 – the perspective framing successfully emphasizes the “shopper” and his urban surroundings, though this is too similar to video 5.

Also, where were these videos shot? We would like to get a clearer sense of this district of Hong Kong.
