[Video Essay] Loneliology

Floor plan:

Sorry that my final video isn’t consistence with my moodboard. A few days ago I was told that my original plan was infeasible due to the pandemic so I had to change my plan. This video is mainly about what would I say to myself if I can go back to four months ago.

Dialogue:

1: oh who are you

2: I’m you from four months in the future actually

1: are you here to tell me what’s gonna happen?

2: yeah yeah but because of the butterfly effect or some issues I can only give you some loose details and you should guess on your own.

1: yeah okay cool

2: so do you want to know the good news? Or the bad news.

1: maybe good…good news?

2: okay, great choice. Well, you can stay at home for the next 4 months. Just stay with your parents and do not need to go back to hk.

1: ???? but why? what about my schoolwork? Online again??????

2: haha actually you will be using zoom for the whole semester.

1: ????????? but if that’s the case, I’ve only been studying offline for almost 2 months this year.

2: yeah but don’t worry. Universities around the world have changed to online teaching.

1: oh !!!!! that’s to bad!!!! Is it because of some global epidemic issues???

2: [nod]. I didn’t say anything.

1: oh that’s awful. So what should I do now? and advices?

2: well, could you just rush to supermarket to store up? get everything you may need?

1: yeah sure

2: and remember to buy masks, as many as possible.

1: okay

2: oh and your sister will give birth to her baby these days. Remember to visit the baby before it’s too late!

1: that’s great! Definitely I will!

2: oh and there’s no need to do your hair for the spring festival. You won’t meet anyone important in the next few months.

1: But that really sounds awful. I mean cannot meet friends, always being alone… sounds incredible.

2: that’s true. But you can learn to enjoy loneliness. That’s quite important, actually.

1: but…how?

2: you have to learn to find the fun of life. You love piano right? Then you can use this time to improve your piano skills.

And guitar, too. Just practice playing the guitar and singing after dinner. What a wonderful life.

Oh yeah and reading! You haven’t been reading since last sem right? Try to read again every night.

Well, and cooking! You always wanna learn to cook didn’t you. It’s time to try cooking!

By the way, you need more exercise to improve your immunity. You can do more yoga or play table tennis with your parents. Do not sit all day long.

1: yes you are right. That sounds cool

2: seriously, the most important thing you will learn in the next four months is how to deal with and enjoy loneliness. I’d like to call it loneliology. It can teach you how to love your life.

1: okay.

2: time’s up. I should go now. relax. You’ll just fine. Okay?

1: okay

2: bye

Wow. It is very creative and funny. Utilizing the vivid dialogue between you in present and you in the future, you show your prediction on the situation of the rest of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 under the virus.
I recommend that you add subtitle for the video which could help you to present your idea more clearly to the audience.
Maybe you can film your dialogue in different places with different scenarios. It might be a more dynamic video.
I suggest that you use some visual effect to help you convey your ideas.
I really enjoy this video. Thank you.

Your film looks questionably similar to an existing online video, in terms of format and some parts of its content. You should have included it in your reference list as well. Having said that, more efforts are required to differentiate your film. What are some references that inform you of your current take on dealing with loneliness? How do different people cope during the pandemic? Also, where are the bad news?

Appreciate the use of other clips of activities to express your theme, but these scenes need to be better curated, in terms of camera techniques, framing, consistency and composition. Was it intentional to include your subject’s head in some scenes and exclude in others? Was it intentional to frame some scenes from first point of view and others in third point of view? Your script and floor plan can be better utilized to help you with these details. Overall, your film’s format is clear and narration is well-paced.
